  1. belabor – to insist on repeatedly
  2. buffet (v) – to toss about
  3. clandestine – secret
  4. complacent – self-satisfied; overly self-assured
  5. deride – to make fun of
  6. disinterment – to remove a body from a grave; exhumation
  7. epithet – a word used to characterize a person
  8. gross – total before deductions (gross earnings before taxes)
  9. hypochondria – mistaken belief that one is ill
  10. impromptu – spontaneous; done quickly

Period 3

  1. penury – poverty, destitution
  2. explicate – provide a detailed explanation
  3. obfuscate – to make obscure, to darken (as in propaganda)
  4. excoriate – to censure in a scathing manner (ex – out, away; corium – skin, hide)
  5. impugn – to attack or challenge as false
  6. cozen – to trick or to defraud
  7. emulate – to imitate
  8. obtuse – lacking mental sharpness; dull
  9. adamant – steadfast, inflexible
  10. virulent – extremely toxic; also bitterly hostile or hateful
